About the Item

This exceptional white marble of the Sleeping Cupid sculpture, lying on a finely carved giltwood base, was created by the well known Florence artist Gioacchino Fortini, living in Florence in 1670-1736. This Cupid depicts an important Sleeping Cupid model made by the Master Michelangelo Buonarroti (Florence) in his younger life. This original model was lost, but it is possible, thought accurate description of it of Giorgio Vasari, to find in this piece the beauty of the Michelangelo sculpture. The exquisite execution of the hair and of the soft texture of the body shape, showcases the recognizable masterful of Gioacchino Fortini in the use of the chisel. Gioacchino Fortini was one of the greatest Tuscan sculptors of the 18th Century. Alongside his activity as a sculptor he was also an architect and medal engraver. His most important work was the sculptural and architectural decoration of the Complex of San Firenze, from 1715. He created numerous sculptures to enrich churches and received numerous commissions from private individuals, such as Villa La Quiete owned by Anna Maria Luisa de' Medici in 1724, villa in which he took care of the interior decoration and the creation of a small theater inside a room of the villa. The piece is in very good state of maintenance and guaranteed original in every parts. The surface was only cleaned and not restored and it is original. The white marble sculpture has its Certificate of Authenticity and full documentation relating to its provenance. There is an accompanying letter confirming the attribution to Gioacchino Fortini, written by Dr. Sandro Bellesi, professor at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, expert in Art History and specialized in Florentine art of the 16th and 17th centuries. He has published many books on the subject and above all a monograph on Gioacchino Fortini. The documents will be shown upon request in case of interest. Bibliography S. Bellesi, Michelangelo.
