About the Item

Late 19th Century alabaster sculpture Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss. The sculpture depicts the mythological scene of Cupid (Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss), a famous subject in Neoclassical art, most notably by Antonio Canova. This theme, originating from Apuleius's "The Golden Ass," symbolizes love's power to awaken and restore life. Such sculptures were popular among wealthy patrons seeking to adorn their homes with classical themes and artistic mastery, often produced in marble or alabaster. The original sculpture is located in the Louvre Museum in Paris, France. Canova created a second, slightly different version for Prince Nicolas Yusupov, which is now in the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg. The original work is noted for its delicate handling of marble, which gives the figures an impression of life and soft flesh. This is a nice late 19th century reproduction in alabaster in good condition but has a few chips and the wings which are removable have been repaired years ago. It's a beautiful piece and a good size for any room.
