Late 19th Century French Large Louis XV Sculpture of a Putto with Zephyr

About the Item

Late 19th century French large Louis XV sculpture of a Putto with Zephyr. A figure of a boy standing on a rectangular plinth, looking aside while holding a ball or stylised poppy capsule and a stick in his hands. His only dress is a drapery around his hips, held in place by a ribbon. His legs are backed by a cloud formation from which a Zephyr's head with puffy cheeks appears and blows a gust of wind. The allegorical meaning of this figure cannot be clarified, since the attributes are not clearly identifiable, but it presumably represents a month or season: the depiction of Zephyr could indicate spring or the months of March or April. In style and size, the putto sculpture fits perfectly with the allegorical putto figure of summer also offered in our 1stDibs portfolio: most likely they are by the same artist and were part of a larger picture program for garden sculptures.
