"Le Rêve" (The dream). Bronze. Moreau, Hippolyte François (1832-1927). France, towards the end of the 19th century. With signature (HIP. Moreau) and foundry stamp (Societe des bronzes de Paris). Bronze sculpture on a circular base showing a halfnaked young woman sitting on a rock, accompanied by plants. The lady looks forward with a dreamy expression, and holds some plants on her knees. Although the aesthetics, theme, posture and lines of the figure still show a strong influence of Neoclassicism, there are certain details (finishes, etc.) that would already allude to a series of changes that began to take place in Art from the second half of 19th century. The model of the present work was conceived in marble in 1887. This bronze has a signature at the bottom of the figure, the stamp of the foundry that made it (Société des Bronzes de Paris) and a plaque at the base with the title (Le Rêve; The Dream) and the legend "Salon des Beaux-Arts". Hippolyte François Moreau (Dijon, 1832-Neuilly-sur-Seine, 1926) was a French sculptor, the son of Jean-Baptiste-LouisJoseph Moreau (with whom he is formed) and a member of this outstanding family. He also studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and showed his work in the Salon of this city between 1863 and 1914. His work was recognized with several Medals (Universal Exhibition of 1878, Universal Exhibition of 1900) and other prizes. Although most of his work is kept in the Dijon Museum of Fine Arts, there are private collections around the world that have his bronzes, in addition to other important institutions. The Société des Bronzes de Paris was active in this city from 1875 to 1930, and came to have a total of three foundry workshops. Weight 30 kg." Size: 30 x 35 x 80 cms.
