About the Item
A fine original lifesize signed Goldscheider hand painted terracotta figure of a young Black child wearing knickers, a jacket and a cap.
Vienna 1890's
The young African American boy is seated with hands folded in his lap on an antique wicker chair in a genre setting. As portraiture, this sculpture is crafted with exceptional skill and sensitivity, showcasing a high degree of realism and character. It features subtle, muted polychrome painting with gentle, warm tones that enhance its artistic appeal.
The Goldscheider factory with it's founding father Friedrich Goldscheider, was one of the finest and influential factories of faience, majolica, terracotta, and ceramics spanning three generations in different countries from 1885 until the 1960's. Many of their creations which won prestigious awards at world fairs and exhibitions
As a leading ceramic manufactory in the late 19th and early 20th centuries, Goldscheider collaborated with gifted artists who excelled in Art Nouveau and Art Deco styles.
Today, Goldscheider figures are highly sought after by collectors worldwide, often fetching impressive prices at auctions.
Provenenace: Ex employee of Jimmy Walker, the 97th Mayor of NYC .
This work of art was purportedly given by Jimmy Walker to an employee as a retirement gift.
The figure comes with the wicker chair as shown in the photos, but if needed, the sculpture will fit and sit on most any chair.
The wicker chair is most probably original to the piece and shows some damage on one leg, including, but not limited to some small paint chips, scratches, wear, commensurate with age and use.
