About the Item
Our Lady of Milk
polychrome stucco relief
scope of Benedetto da Maiano
Florence, 16th century
cm 66 x 18 x 43
From the 15th century onward, the pleasure of modeling terracotta and stucco for the production of sacred works of art often directed to commissions and private use developed in Florence among the most important and in-demand sculptors.
The birth therefore of artifacts of high aesthetic, historical and symbolic value, which featured shields on the base; on which the coats of arms of the purchasing families were then painted.
Part of this production is the beautiful Madonna del Latte, in polychrome stucco, presented here.
On a linear plinth, slightly arched on the front and ending in two shields (ready to receive the buyers' weapons) rests a splendid Madonna and Child.
The same is wrapped in a blue mantle, edged in gold and moved in elegant drapery.
Mary holds in her lap, softly seated on a pillow, the infant Jesus.
Jesus, having his face surrounded by a golden halo, is depicted with a sprig of coral around his neck (an amulet for childhood and representing, with its red color, the blood of Christ) and is caught while, with a serene expression, looking toward the viewer.
Our Lady with her face surrounded by a halo and wrapped in a white veil, with her right hand she holds the Child to herself with motherly gentleness, and with her left hand she offers her breast.
Both faces exude great serenity and loving gentleness.
The work, very "emotional," is of Florentine production; referable to Benedetto da Maiano and his circle (see Madonna del Latte in the Museum of Palazzo Pretorio in Prato)
In case the work is purchased by non-Italian customers the same will require the certificate of free movement.
