Magnificent Aztec Eagle Head with pre-1970 UNESCO-compliant provenance

About the Item

Magnificent Aztec Basalt Eagle head, with powerful hooked beak, piercing eyes, and a fully-feathered head. The sculptor Highlighted the power of the head by finely burnishing the beak and eyes to create a strong contrast with the rough surface of the feathers. In the center of the bottom of the head is a rectangular mortise which would have been attached to a tenon, to secure it to the wall of a temple or Eagle Warrior House. The eagle was the totem animal of the Aztecs, and when they arrived in the Valley of Mexico and saw an eagle perched on a cactus with a rattlesnake in its mouth, they saw that as a confirmation that they had indeed found their homeland, and proceeded to established their capital there(This eagle image is still found on the contemporary Mexican flag) Provenance: Private L.A.
