Teotihuacan Translucent Tecali Figure with Pre-1970 Provenance

About the Item

Extremely Fine and large Teotihuacan sculpture of a standing Lord wearing a layered tunic, and having strong and beautifully sculpted facial features. Teotihuacan Culture, Teotihuacan, Valley of Mexico, Circa 400-650 A.D. The sculpture is carved from translucent Tecali (Mexican Onyx), which was a favored stone for the creation of masks and figures because its translucence contributed to the mystery of these pieces, which were created to connect to the world beyond. This particular stone also has an unusual opaque white section on the front which enhances the Geometric pyramidal structure of the figure. in addition, the sculpture has strong remains of red color(hematite or cinnabar) on the surface, which was added to devotional objects by most Pre-Columbian Cultures to enliven them. PROVENANCE - Collection of Ian Arundei, the proprietor of the Old Curiosity Shop in Los Angeles from the 1960's to the 1980's. Collected in the 1960's, and sold by his son Colin Arundel in 2004
