About the Item

This amazing sculpture in Carrara marble was made around 1850 by the French sculptor Joseph Michel-Ange Pollet, after one of his plaster models presented at the Salon de Paris in 1848. It is a statue in the round called An Hour of the Night, showing a woman stretching with her eyes closed. The sheath in sea-green marble with Doric codes is fluted at the shaft, and is equipped with a rotating device. A weary putti awakens at the feet of the sleeping Hour and holds flowers in his hands which are similar to those on the naked woman's crown. As her delicately bent feet swim through the air, a drape appears to slide from her pelvis to the putti at her feet, ending in the shape of a drop of water near the signature "J. Pollet" on the base. A similar work by J. Pollet is in the collections of the Louvre, but only ours is accompanied by its sea-green marble column. He is very skillful in the aerial figure that he seems to make the marble body float in space.

Ducel Foundry after Pierre Loison, Young Girl with a Conch, mid-19th century
By J.J. Ducel, Pierre Loison 1
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
This statue, titled Young Girl with a Conch, was cast by the Ducel Foundry after a work by Pierre Loison in the mid-19th century. The sculptor Pierre Loison (or Loyson) (1816-1886) began his career as an apprentice to a clog maker. Noticed for his talent, he was able to study sculpture in the studio of David d’Angers and at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He received numerous official commissions and exhibited in nearly every Salon from 1845 until 1886, the year of his death, as well as at the 1855 Universal Exhibition. The Ducel Foundry was founded in 1800 in Touraine. It was successively managed by three generations of the Ducel family: Jacques, Jean-Jacques, and Jacques-Gustave. The company had a store in Paris and gained recognition by participating in various international exhibitions held in the second half of the 19th century. It was purchased by the Val d’Osne Foundry in 1878. This sculpture depicts a young girl seated on a rock by the water’s edge. She may represent a naiad, a deity associated with rivers and springs. Her posture conveys movement, as if she is about to enter the water: her face and torso lean forward, she holds onto the rock with her left hand, and in her right hand, she grasps a conch shell, which could emit a jet of water. A drapery covers her waist, and both legs extend toward the water. The statue bears an inscription on the base indicating its origin: “JJ DUCEL...

Napoleon III Vase in Porcelain of Paris Mounted in Gilt Bronze with Espagnolette
By Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres
Located in SAINT-OUEN-SUR-SEINE, FR
This exceptional monumental vase in porcelain of Paris, conceived in the spirit of the Sèvres Manufactory’s productions, is quite characteristic of the Napoleon III style . The long neck of the shape is extremely rare, as well as the gilt bronzes’ richness of ornamentation. Its dimensions and its important bronze mount indicate a ceremonial piece, of supreme luxury, comparable to those the Manufactory exhibited at the World's Fairs. Evoking the aristocratic art of the Ancien Regime in many ways, this vase pays tribute to the refinements of the 18th century, and could have been commissioned to decorate the mansion of a 19th century personality. Indeed, the “Celestial blue” background, embellished with gold arabesques, is characteristic of the porcelains from the Royal Manufactory of Vincennes as early as 1753, which became the Sèvres Manufactory. It is a famous blue, difficult to obtain, which served to decorate the first service delivered to Louis XV. The lively shapes of the bronze base also evoke the art of the ornamentalists in Louis XV’s time, such as Jean-Claude Duplessis or Gouthiere, who were in charge of drawing gilt bronze mounts for China porcelain. The bronze mount of our vase is hence very close to the Duplessis’ ornementations. The two espagnolettes, with sheathed busts of women...
