About the Item
Monumental Patinated Zinc Statue of Saint George and the Dragon
After Émile Louis Picault (1833–1915)
France, Early 20th Century
This commanding monumental figure in patinated zinc depicts the legendary triumph of Saint George slaying the dragon, a theme that has symbolized the victory of faith and virtue over chaos for centuries. Standing 45 inches high to the tip of the sword (38 inches to the top of the figure), the warrior is shown in dynamic contrapposto, spear raised in victory as the defeated dragon writhes at his feet. The statue is mounted on a substantial black marble base (12" W x 9" D), with the removable sword designed for ease of transport.
Executed in zinc with a rich dark patina, the sculpture captures remarkable anatomical detail, from the musculature of the youthful saint to the dramatic scales and expression of the beast. The use of zinc—a favored medium of the late 19th and early 20th centuries—allowed for large-scale works with fine modeling, while the patination evokes the gravitas of bronze.
The allegory is further enhanced by classical references: Saint George wears a crested helmet crowned with a winged dragon, underscoring his heroic role as both Christian knight and timeless classical warrior. Closely following models by Émile Louis Picault, one of France’s most prolific sculptors of allegorical and heroic subjects, this work embodies the masculine strength and moral idealism that defined his oeuvre.
A powerful decorative statement, this monumental sculpture offers the drama and symbolism of a 19th-century bronze at an impressive scale, while retaining the artistry and presence that made Picault’s works so admired.
Materials & Techniques
Zinc Casting (Spelter): Zinc became a favored material in the late 19th and early 20th centuries due to its ability to capture fine detail while being lighter and less costly than bronze.
Patination: The dark surface finish imitates bronze, lending depth and gravitas while protecting the surface.
Assembly: Large figures such as this were often cast in sections and carefully joined, with detachable elements (like the sword) designed for practicality.
Base: The heavy black marble plinth stabilizes the figure and elevates it, reinforcing its monumentality.
Symbolism & Iconography
Saint George: Depicted as the archetypal Christian knight, armored and youthful, he embodies courage, faith, and divine justice.
Dragon: Crushed beneath his foot, the dragon symbolizes chaos, evil, and paganism—an allegory of man’s struggle against destructive forces.
Helmet & Laurel: The winged-crested helmet and laurel details reference classical antiquity, situating George as both a medieval and timeless heroic figure.
Raised Spear/Sword: The upward thrust signals divine sanction and triumph, a visual metaphor for righteousness prevailing.
Historical Context
Émile Louis Picault (1833–1915) was one of France’s most prolific sculptors of allegorical and heroic subjects, often portraying warriors, mythological gods, and moral virtues. His work reflected the academic taste of the late 19th century, when classical and Christian themes were revived in sculpture for both private salons and public monuments.
Zinc statues in particular made monumental imagery more accessible, and their bronze-like patina was prized for its stately presence. This example exemplifies that tradition—an impressive decorative piece with the masculine vigor and moralizing narrative typical of Picault’s oeuvre.
