A handsome hand-carved alabaster style sculpture of an Olympian athlete preparing to hurl a disc, probably 20th century. Possibly soapstone or resin, but resembles alabaster. This stunning sculpture highlights the juxtaposition between fragility - in material and gentle craftsmanship - and strength - in the subject matter. The athlete’s muscles ripple, sunlight refracted from each carve, and yet we can look at such a piece and understand innately it would shatter were it to fall. This dichotomy heightens the excellence of this extraordinary artwork.
