About the Item

Our magnificent centerpiece bowl in terracotta by Gustave-Joseph Chéret (1838-1894) is fashioned as a Venetian gondola with Roman goddess seated at the bow and cherubs clinging to garland vines along the body, and mounted on a rectangular pedestal with Greek key motif. Excellent condition. Signed Joseph Cheret. One of the finest works in terracotta we have offered in our thirty years in business, and in extraordinary condition. From a Palm Beach estate and clearly well cared for throughout its history of ownership. The artist was the younger brother of the painter Jules Chéret. From 1887 he worked for Manufacture Nationale de Sèvres, and is also known for his collaborations with the celebratedceramist, Joseph-Théodore Deck.
