About the Item

"THE NIGHT HIPNOS" Italian Terracotta Mask 20th Century 40cm x 20cm THE NIGHT - PRIMORDIAL DIVINITY According to the Orphic tradition (from Orpheus singer and musician, son of Eagro, King of Thrace and the muse Calliope) she was born from Chaos (the immense empty space from which all things were born) in the form of a black bird together with Erebus (personification of darkness and brother and husband of Night). Night, fertilized by the wind, laid a silver egg from which Eros or Protogonos, "firstborn", was born. From Erebus, according to Hesiod, Night had Aether (the light of the sky) and Hemera (the day). In every version of the myth, Night was a primordial goddess, like Gea (Mother Earth) and Thetis (Titanic, mother of Achilles), feared even by Zeus. Among the children of the Night were the Furies (Vengeance, Fury and Hatred, respectively Alecto, Tisiphone and Megaera, although for Plutarch it was only one Adrastia, the Remorse), Destiny, the Moirai (the three Goddesses of Fate), Death (allegorical divinity, the Yew and the Cypress were sacred to her), Sleep (beneficial and consoling god) and Dreams (they had large black wings), the Hesperides (Western Nymphs, Aegle the shining, Erytheia the reddish and Hesper the evening) and Nemesis (the goddess of revenge), Discord (or Eris, personification of discord and mother of all evils), Pain etc. all born by Her alone. She lived in the far west where the Sun set and darkness rose. All nocturnal animals were sacred to her and she was depicted veiled and seated on an ebony chariot drawn by black horses and with a scepter in her hand. She often held two children in her arms: one white, the symbol of sleep and one black, the symbol of death.
