"Nude with Lily Pad, " Important Bronze Candlestick by Roman Bronze Works

About the Item

This sensuous, languorous female nude, cast in bronze and designed to serve as a candle base, was probably sculpted by Edith Barretto Stevens Parsons, given that the artist did another sculpture with a similar pose that was cast by the Roman Bronze Works, as here. The figure's close embrace of the sinuous lily pad (which provides the place for a candle) shows the clear influence of Auguste Rodin and the Art Nouveau movement. This piece has a dark, lustrous patina, displays the foundry mark, and the date of creation, 1904.
