'Olimpia': Art Déco Spelter Sculpture with Stone Base by Le Faguays (Fayral)

About the Item

'Olimpia': Art Déco french spelter sculpture with stone base by Pierre Le Faguays (Fayral) for Max Le Verrier By: Pierre Le Faguays (Fayral), Max Le Verrier Material: metal, spelter, stone, zinc, lead Technique: cast, patinated, carved, molded, hand-carved, metalwork Dimensions: 5 in x 12.5 in x 20 in Date: early 20th century, circa 1930 Style: Art Déco Place of origin: France 'Olimpia' is a dynamic 1930s french Art Déco sculpture cast in patinated spelter depicting a greek woman athlete captured mid-movement, arms lifted and legs extended as if leaping. The sloping stone base bears the signature of Pierre Le Faguays, known also as Fayral, who created the original work for the Max Le Verrier foundry. Le Faguays' sculpture expresses the modern aesthetic through its stylized elongated form and sense of motion. His pseudonym Fayral and the Le Verrier foundry stamp can be found near the figure's left foot. 'Olimpia' exemplifies the Art Déco style popular in early 20th century France. The patinated spelter and carved stone materials showcase the technical skill of the Max Le Verrier foundry while alluding to classical themes. Pierre Le Faguays, known also as Fayral, contributed considerably to Art Déco statuary, producing figurative works and decorative objects in diverse media for prominent parisian foundries such as Susse Frères, Edmond Etling, and Max Le Verrier, as evidenced by this sculpture.
