Loet Vanderveen large seated cheetah bronze sculpture
By Loet Vanderveen
Located in Walnut Creek, CA
Large limited edition (44/500) Seated Cheetah bronze sculpture by Loet Vanderveen. Dimensions are 19 1/2" tall by 21 1/2" wide and 9 1/2" deep. Weighs in at a hefty 44.4 lbs. Nice green/blue patina. Nice vintage condition with only minor signs of wear.
Born in Rotterdam, Holland Loet Vanderveen's childhood home was close to the zoo. It was during this period in life that he developed his love for animals. At night he would listen to the sound of the animals in the zoo, and fantasize about African safaris... fantasies which were eventually realized. During the WWII bombardment of Rotterdam the animals were destroyed as well as his home. These events led Vanderveen to a new phase in his life. He escaped occupied Holland for England, and was decorated for valor by Queen Wilhelmia. He served in the R.A.F. during the war.
After WWII, Vanderveen lived in Zurich, London and New York working as a fashion designer. Creatively unsatisfied with his profession he began private ceramic studies with the head of the Far Eastern department of the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (Fong Chao). He mastered Chinese...

(certificate of authenticity provided)
N.B. Alexander Kosolapov's sculptures, paintings, and prints provoke harsh criticism, sometimes censorship, and often humor. His jokes are not partisan—they poke at both Russia and the United States. He appropriates imagery from Soviet history, pop culture, religion, and art history that he combines in often subversive ways. Taking a cue from Andy Warhol, Kosolapov delights in iconic symbols of American consumerist culture. For Kosolapov, these include Mickey Mouse, Marlboro, and Coca-Cola, images of which he links with political and religious figures central to Russian culture, including Stalin, Lenin, and Christ. He never forgets his place in the continuum of art history, often including some nod to artists who preceded him.
In Mickey-Lenin, the major players are obvious: Mickey Mouse and Vladimir Lenin, and the connotations come easily: East-West, Russia-United States, communism-capitalism, good-evil, and high-low. Kosolapov modeled the figure's body after statues of Lenin by the Soviet sculptor Nikolai Tomsky, and its pose is that of a classical Roman figure sculpted in the traditional medium of bronze. Kosolapov developed the idea for Mickey-Lenin shortly after immigrating to the United States in 1975. He found the discarded plastic head of a Mickey Mouse toy, took it home, and placed it atop a small sculpture of Lenin that he kept on his desk.
Kosolapov identifies with a movement known as Sots Art. Developed in Moscow in the 1970s by the art duo Komar and Melamid, Sots Art (an abbreviation of "socialist pop art") reacted against the conformist...

steel, found objects
20 x 6 x 20.5 in.
Artist statement
I seldom use stock material, but prefer distressed and rusted steel that has been scarred, bent, and made imperfect. In this state, the material becomes quite beautiful. There are figurative elements in my work, though I am more drawn to the non-figurative, to the raw and essential aspect of steel. The industrial purpose of steel must be considered, its use in construction, manufacturing, the military. Steel is forged with enormous energy and power. The process is violent, loud. Here, it is still and approachable.
The compositions are constructed mainly from found parts. Their relationships manifest as I interact with the material. The pieces interlock, balance, and become fitted before I fasten or weld them together. The engineering is elemental. Altering the material is avoided. The number of parts kept to a minimum.
Art is my spiritual exercise, my selflessness. It identifies me as a creator and satisfies my human longing for place and purpose. It needs not to be great, or preeminent, or commercial. Art speaks because it is primitive. It exists because it is sacred.
Bio
Scott Gordon was born in Ridgewood, New Jersey in 1966. He attended the University of Denver where he studied business and the University of Washington where he pursued an MFA in creative writing. While he was in Seattle, he was introduced to steel as an employee of the David Gulassa Company, a fabrication shop which produced custom furniture and architectural fixtures. At Gulassa, after hours and on weekends, Scott worked on personal projects, applying the tools and techniques used in his daily work. Lacking resources to purchase stock materials, much of the steel he used came from the scrap bins at Gulassa. He also used steel found along the railways, shipyards, and industrial corridors of Seattle. The characteristics and limitations of the material helped him to define his aesthetic and his approach to sculpture. He currently lives and works in Vermont.
