Over Life-Size Bronze Sculpture of an Orientalist Female Figure

About the Item

Standing over two and a half metres tall, this sculpture is truly exceptional—an unusual, and remarkable, statement piece. The sculpture features a standing female figure, her dress distinctly Orientalist in nature. She is cast from bronze, with light, conforming clothing draped over her body. Moreover, the bronze has been skilfully patinated, increasing the sense of texture and tonal variety. She holds in her left hand, which lies by her side, a gilt bronze mirror; her right hand, lifted high over her head, grasps a large six-light candelabrum, also formed of gilt bronze. The figure is elevated on a gilt bronze three-leg podium, its warm colour further accenting the gilt bronze mirror and candelabrum, as well as the parcel gilt features of the figure, such as her necklace and headdress—the latter of which is draped with malachite beads. This remarkable sculpture epitomises the best of the Belle Époque—few pieces of such scale and grandeur are available today. Coutan was elected to the Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1905.[3] Coutan is best known in the United States for the sculptural group above the entrance to Grand Central Terminal in New York City. For Grand Central Terminal, Coutan was contracted to provide a quarter-size scale plaster model of the three-figure allegorical Transportation group, which he developed from 1911 through 1914. The carving was performed by the William Bradley & Son of Long Island City.[4] Among Coutan's students were Hippolyte Lefèbvre, Raymond Delamarre...
