About the Item

Exceptional reproduction of the renowned pair of bronze runner statues discovered at the Villa of the Papyri in Herculaneum, now housed in the National Archaeological Museum of Naples. These figures are Roman copies from the 1st century BC of lost Greek originals dated to the 4th century BC—masterpieces that embody the athletic spirit of the ancient world. Depicting two nude athletes mid-stride, the statues reflect the idealized forms of classical Greek sculpture. In ancient Greece, runners competed in the prestigious stadion race during the Olympic Games, with victors earning the honor of naming the Olympiad and lighting the sacred flame. Legendary figures such as Astylos of Croton, Oebotas of Dyme, and Cylon of Athens stand as testaments to the enduring legacy of this tradition. Cast in bronze with inlaid marble eyes, these reproductions capture the dynamism, tension, and expressive detail of the originals. Ideal for collectors of classical art or as striking statement pieces for interior or garden display. Dimensions (each): Height: 43.3 in (110 cm) Width: 35.4 in (90 cm) Depth: 12.6 in (32 cm) Condition: Excellent condition. Patinated bronze with fine surface detail and marble inlaid eyes. Faithful to the aesthetic and proportions of the archaeological originals.
