These figures are Roman copies from the 1st century BC of lost Greek originals dated to the 4th century BC—masterpieces that embody the athletic spirit of the ancient world.
Depicting two nude athletes mid-stride, the statues reflect the idealized forms of classical Greek sculpture. In ancient Greece, runners competed in the prestigious stadion race during the Olympic Games, with victors earning the honor of naming the Olympiad and lighting the sacred flame. Legendary figures such as Astylos of Croton, Oebotas of Dyme, and Cylon of Athens stand as testaments to the enduring legacy of this tradition.
