About the Item

Pair of Dresden porcelain sculptures representing a lady and gentleman of the aristocracy. Polychrome and gilded decoration, on white porcelain and a round base decorated in various tones. The lady is depicted with a graceful and slightly inclined posture, delicately holding two spinning reels. The costume simulates fine, light fabrics, decorated with small floral motifs in shades of pink, green and orange. The layers of the dress are highlighted by soft blue ruffles and ribbons. The hairstyle, carefully sculpted with curls and decorated with a blue ribbon, which matches the details of the dress, with a serene expression, reinforces the idea of elegance and delicacy. The shoes, painted in pink with blue details like the gentleman's, add a touch of charm to the figure. The gentleman complements the lady with an equally detailed and exquisite outfit. He wears a light lilac coat, decorated with gold buttons and fine embroidery. The vest, in shades of white, pink and gold, features floral prints that echo the piece's romantic theme. Striped pants in soft colors, such as yellow, pink and green, create a harmonious contrast with the rest of the outfit.

Bottger instead discovered the method of creating porcelain, a favored and valuable item in the king's eyes. The king announced to Europe in 1710 that he would open a porcelain manufactory in Dresden. He instead opened one at nearby Albrechtsburg castle. Espionage was rampant, and the king guarded his porcelain secret, even though it meant imprisoning workers within the castle walls. By 1720, the secret was leaked and porcelain producers popped up in Vienna and Venice. Dresden Porcelain adopted Saxon crossed swords in under-glaze blue as its distinguishing mark. In 1736, the porcelain manufactory produced the "Swan Service...
