Pair of Early 18th Century English Giltwood Lions

About the Item

A magnificent pair of giltwood lions. The two animals call to mind England's Coronation chair, commissioned by King Edward I to contain the Stone of Scone brought to Westminster Abbey in 1296. Constructed four years later, the chair has been in use as the official coronation chair of the Kings and Queens of England from 1308 onward. The gold lions on the plinth of the chair were created in 1727 to replace the pair originally installed in the early 1500s. Almost certainly the pair of lions here offered are from a similar royal chair or cathedra for officiating purposes. Beautiful relics of early Georgian England, circa 1710.
