About the Item

Exquisitely sculpted with meticulous attention to detail, these finely chased metal sculptures by Eugène Cornu offer a remarkably realistic rendition. The male figure is depicted as a young tribal Orientalist man, distinguished by his beard, moustache and turban. He is barefoot, clad in a loosely fitted robe, and carries a beautifully woven basket overflowing with an assortment of fruits, including pineapples. A sack is hanging from his shoulder. His stride is confident and self-assured, exuding a sense of purpose and strength. In contrast, the female figure is a young woman, also barefoot and dressed in a loosely fitted robe with a decorative upper bodice. She too carries a basket filled to the brim with fruits, with an abundance spilling over into the folds of her clothing at her hip. Holding an abundance of fruits in her draped clothing at her hip, suggesting fertility and sensuality. Her posture conveys a sense of serenity and grace, embodying a gentle yet vibrant spirit. The initials of the artist E.C. are stamped in gilt on each of the figures. Eugène Cornu These figures are typical of 19th-century Orientalist art which often portrayed romanticized and exoticized views of Middle Eastern and North African cultures. Together, they create a captivating tableau that blends elements of tradition, beauty, and abundance. Arabic, Tunisian, Moroccan, Islamic , Algerian, Afghan, primitive, Neoclassical, Traditional, Transitional, Aesthetic, Beaux Arts, International.
