Pair of French 19th Century Louis XVI St. Ormolu and Silvered Bronze Statues
About the Item
An elegant and high quality true pair of French 19th century Louis XVI st. ormolu and silvered bronze statues. Each statue is raised by silvered bronze oval bases with Fine mottled foliate ormolu bands and strikingly decorative and extremely charming pierced central ormolu mounts. The mounts depict finely chased cherubs playing with their bows and arrows and unsettling bee hives while the bees fly above them. To the back are additional ormolu mounts depicting Eros escaping by sea using his bow and quiver as a boat and his arrows as oars. All the while holding the eternal flame wrapped with his blindfold as a sail. The statues above are of a handsome man kneeling while holding a staff with his cloak draped over his shoulder. He faces the beautiful maiden, possibly Diana, who is also kneeling on a sea designed base with a striking dolphin at her feet. She wears her hair in an updo and is also draped in a wonderfully executed flowing fabric while holding her arms in the air. Wonderful attention to detail. All original gilt throughout.
