Pair of Neoclassical Bacchantes Sculptures in Bronze signed Ernest Rancoulet

About the Item

This charming pair of Neoclassical Bronze Bacchantes sculptures by Earnest Rancoulet originate from France, Circa 1900. These young and playful mythological figures are followers of Dionysus, engaging in rituals of dance and exuberance while clothed in animal skins. One can observe the vines depicted in the hair of each figure, as well as their musical instruments, one carrying a tambourine and the other what appear to be finger symbols. References to ancient Gods and spirits is commonly used by artists throughout history, often serving to lend traditional strength to their work as well as being able to push the boundaries of acceptable taste in their time period through cementing the figures to a widely accepted primal past. This clever historical slight of hand is put on full display in these stunning works. They feature beautifully sculpted figures in bronze, contraposed to reveal lively movement and stimulating form from all angles. The figures rest on matching Ionic Pedestals in Onyx with Gilt Neoclassical ormolu embellishment. Signed by the artist "Rancoulet" on the cylindrical bronze elements on each sculpture, this pair will serve as an excellent addition for those who collect and appreciate the finest of early 20th Century sculpture and bronze work. Hand-Sculpted French Cubist Abstract Sculpture in Terracotta Signed "Philip"
Located in New York, NY
This sophisticated and alluring Mid-Century Modern Sculpture was realized in France circa 1950. Executed in terra cotta with a oil rubbed bronze colored glaze, the work presents an abstract and dynamic form- bristling with verve. An elongated form rises from an elliptical base offering both smooth and curvilinear aspects as well as faceted ones concluding in a curved tongue-like appendage with a pointed end. Additionally, there is what appears to be a lug or nut cantilevering from side of the piece, suggesting metamorphosis or some kind of animatronic influence. The amorphic form recalls the highly stylized renderings of tools by Lee Lozano...
