About the Item

A rare and visually arresting pair of hand-sculpted Murano glass figures by Archimede Seguso, dating to the 1940s. These elegant depictions of peasant farm workers are infused with a powerful Art Deco sensibility—elongated limbs, sweeping silhouettes, and a stylized minimalism that evokes both grace and strength. Formed in clear and green glass with shimmering gold inclusions, the figures reflect Seguso’s mastery of both technique and form. The gold avventurina accents are captured within the glass itself, giving them a subtle radiance that changes with the light. Their stylized poses capture the balance between abstraction and narrative that defined Italian decorative art at midcentury. Archimede Seguso (1909–1999) is widely considered one of the greatest Venetian glass artists of the 20th century. Born into a legendary Murano glassmaking family, Seguso began working in glass as a child and rose to artistic prominence by the 1930s. He was a technical virtuoso—reviving and refining lost techniques such as filigrana, merletto, and bullicante, while pioneering new sculptural forms. His work stood out not just for its extraordinary craftsmanship, but for its sensitivity, movement, and soul. By the time these figures were made, Seguso was already recognized as a master—his pieces exhibited internationally and collected by museums and discerning patrons around the world. Created in the early post-WWII period, these sculptures are part of Murano’s artistic resurgence—a time when glassmakers broke free from Fascist austerity and embraced experimentation once again. Seguso led this charge, blending the soul of Venetian tradition with the modernist desire for expressive purity. These figures, sculptural yet human, are a striking example of that moment in time: historical, modern, and deeply collectible. Their presence in a space is both bold and serene—perfectly at home in a refined interior or as a statement piece in a curated collection.
