About the Item

This pair of Piedmontese papier-mâché magots dates back to the 19th century. The figures, with smiling expressions, wear richly decorated traditional Chinese clothing: one with a golden tunic adorned with floral patterns and the other with a green robe with embroidered details. The faces express a humorous realism, typical of magots, which were used both as decorations and as symbols of Eastern exoticism in Europe at the time.
