Pair of Silvered Bronze Models of the Marly Horses After Guillaume Coustou

About the Item

This pair of silvered bronze models show semi-clad classical male attendants restraining their rearing horses. They are modeled after the 1739 sculptures in marble by Guillaume Coustou, which were made for the Chateau de Marly and can now be seen in the Louvre Museum, Paris. The original sculptures exemplified the best in neoclassical style and were therefore exceptionally popular during the course of the 19th century. These models are crafted in silvered bronze and are set on a naturalistic bases, signed 'Coustou' to the underside.

This lovely pair of antique Victorian highly detailed sculptures of the famed Marly rearing horse and groom sculptures are after the stone originals by Guillaume Coustou and will look amazing on your mantle, or wherever you decide. These small replica sculptures were done by many different artists in the late 19th century and were all the rage. Most were never signed but show the original signature of Coustou on the base, as do these.
