About the Item

This dynamic antique patinated bronze sculpture is composed of two female figures and a satyr captured in a moment of frenzied dancing and Bacchic revelry. The women are dressed in flowing tunics, with their figures adorned with flowers and vines. Both of the women hold bunches of grapes, which the young satyr eats. The grapes are an attribute of the Greek god of wine, Bacchus. The figures are set on a circular naturalistic base, and the sculpture is based on a 1762 model by Claude Michel Clodion (French, 1738-1814). Its base is signed and dated 'Clodion / 1762'. Claude Michel, known as Clodion, was one of the most creative and technically gifted French sculptors of the second half of the 18th century. Working in the Rococo style, Clodion became particularly well-known for his works in marble and terracotta. The sculptor’s reputation quickly grew and Clodion became highly sought after by members of the elite European nobility and royalty. Clodion continued to work until his death in 1814.
