Patinated Bronze "Bacchanalia" after Claude Michel Clodion

About the Item

Patinated bronze "Bacchanalia" after the celebrated 1762 model by Claude Michel Clodion (French, 1738-1814), circa late 19th century. #1555 The figural group of two female figures with a putto, set on a circular naturalistic base, signed and dated 'Clodion / 1762'. The piece has wonderful detail and is in very good vintage condition with a great patina. The sculptural group is truly remarkable and the casting is a highly complex work involving fourteen different segments: arms and legs are fitted and attached to torsos, these affixed to the base from beneath. It is a powerful subject that combines all elements of the Bacchanalia: pan-pipes laying restive on the ground, pine cones, the tambourine in hand, grapes and the dancing satyr. Detail throughout the piece is simply excellent, the skill of the foundry self evident in the exquisite chiseling and finishing work, the sculpture retaining it’s original nearly blackened patina. As one of the most important classical sculptors, Clodion’s work has been heavily recast - this casting was executed in the late 19th century, the extraordinary quality of casting differentiating the work from the inferior pieces cast circa 1900 and later. Measurements: 17” H x 8” W x 7" D Claude Michel Clodion began his artistic career in the workshop of his uncle, the sculptor Lambert Sigisbert Adam, and would continue in that of Jean-Baptiste Pigalle. He obtained in 1759 the Grand Prize of Sculpture of the Academie Royale, which was followed by other recognitions (Prix de Rome 1762, etc.), and also showed his creations at the Paris Salon in several years. Upon returning from Rome, he opened his own workshop in Paris, where he worked on various modeling techniques and was recognized for his mythological scenes, groups of dancers, nymphs and bathers, inspired by the Rococo. He worked in Russia for Catherine II of Russia, and carried out works for the Parliament of Languedoc, the Cabildo de Rouen, etc. His works are preserved in numerous private collections around the world and in important institutions (Louvre Museum, Versailles, Notre-Dame de Rouen Cathedral, National Gallery of Art in Washington, Victoria & Albert Museum in London).

Pair of Bronze Figurines after Michel Clodion
By Claude Michel Clodion
Located in LA CIOTAT, FR
A delightful pair of patinated bronze statuettes, originally candelabra, after Clodion (Claude Michel Clodion 1738 – 1814), depicting a young satyr and satyress. Mounted on truncated columns of fluted white marble, and marked with the Clodion signature (of questionable authenticity) these figurines now show no trace of the original candelabra screw fixtures. The original models for these figurines are attributed to Clodion (for the young satyr) and to Louis Felix de la Rue...
