About the Item
A Highly Important and Very Rare Pair of Italian Life-Sized Carrara Marble Figures of Dancer Sculptures: Danzatrice con le Mani sui Fianchi & Danzatrice col Dito al Mento ( Dancing Girl with Her Hands on Her Hips; Dancing Girl with Her Finger on Her Chin), After the Models by Antonio Canova (1757-1822), by Pietro Bazzanti.
This museum-quality, life-size pair of marble sculptures represents two of Antonio Canova’s most celebrated dancer figures, Danzatrice con le Mani sui Fianchi and Danzatrice col Dito al Mento. Exemplifying the idealized beauty central to neoclassical sculpture, each figure is carved from fine white marble and stands gracefully on a fluted columnar pedestal. The first dancer is shown poised with her hands resting on her hips, one leg slightly bent, and her draped garments gathered delicately around her form. Her hair is adorned with a floral wreath, and the softly rendered folds of her gown convey the lightness of movement. The companion figure inclines her head to one side, gently touching her chin with her finger while holding a garland of flowers in her left hand. Both compositions capture the rhythmic motion of dance through the interplay of flowing drapery and the balanced contrapposto stance of the figures, qualities that made such works highly sought after by Grand Tour collectors.
The marble surface displays refined modeling with sharply defined details in the hair, floral wreaths, and the layered folds of the dresses. The texture of the skin is smooth and subtly polished, while the garments are deeply carved to suggest the transparency of fabric. Each sculpture rests on an integral circular base, supported by a classical fluted plinth of columnar design, emphasizing the neoclassical harmony of the compositions. The life-size scale of these sculptures corresponds closely to the dimensions of the original marbles, illustrating the precision and skill evident in their execution. The balanced proportion and symmetry of the figures demonstrate the remarkable craftsmanship in recreating Canova’s celebrated models.
A closely related pair was sold at Christie’s London, The Exceptional Sale, on 6 July 2023 (lot 58), achieving a price realised of GBP 289,800 (USD 369,170). That life-size pair, identical in scale and subject, was described as among the finest examples after Canova’s original models. The present sculptures correspond in their precise proportions, refined surface treatment, and meticulous rendering of the drapery, reaffirming their direct relationship to the celebrated Canova prototypes and the enduring appeal of his neoclassical aesthetic.
Canova’s Danzatrice con le Mani sui Fianchi (1805–1812) and Danzatrice col Dito al Mento (1809–1814) were originally conceived as pendants. Although the former model predates the latter by several years, they have been closely associated since their creation. The original plaster models for both survive in the Gipsoteca of Possagno (inventory nos. 168 and 196, respectively). The primary marble version of Danzatrice con le Mani sui Fianchi resides in the State Hermitage Museum, St. Petersburg, while Danzatrice col Dito al Mento is preserved in the Galleria Nazionale d’Arte Antica in Rome. Together, these figures exemplify Canova’s exploration of movement, grace, and idealized beauty within the neoclassical canon, themes that made him the foremost sculptor of his age.
