Plaster miniatures of the Parthenon frieze in a box resembling books, Grand Tour, John Hennig, 19th century
John Henning (United Kingdom, 1771–1851)
Plaster miniatures of the Parthenon frieze presented in boxes resembling books, "Henning's Sculptures Parthenon Vol. 3 and Parthenon Vol. 4."
Each with six signed plaques and inscriptions detailing the year of manufacture, the month and day, the location, and the part of the Parthenon they represent.
Henning was one of the first artists to access the classical sculpture collection of Lord Elgin, who had brought fragments of the Parthenon back to England. He was given permission to draw the Parthenon friezes, even adding the missing parts. He made plaster reproductions, which the British Museum sold in boxed sets resembling books during the 19th century.
