Pluto kidnapping Proserpina. Bronze. Following models by BOIZOT, Louis-Simon (Paris, 1743-1809); XIX century. Column engraving (Boizot); handwritten numbering (see base). Bronze sculpture with a circular base that shows a mature man, with a beard and crown, grabbing and dragging a semi-naked young woman. The piece is supported by a series of garlands at the bottom and a small circular pedestal with a base on which there is another garland in relief and an engraved word (Boizot). Theme that appears, for example, in Ovid's Metamorphoses, the scene shows the moment in which Pluto kidnaps Proserpina, daughter of Jupiter and Ceres, who was collecting flowers (note the garlands and the basket in the figure), to take her away. to the Underworld. It is a relatively frequent theme in Art, highlighting, for example, the marble work of Bernini (Borghese Gallery), a painting by Rubens (Prado Museum), several Roman sarcophagi (4th century AD in the Church of San Feliú de Girona; Uffizi Gallery in Florence). The present sculpture is inspired by a bronze by Louis-Simon Boizot, a copy of which is kept in the Petit Palais (Paris, France). It is known that at least one other series was made in the 19th century, much more similar to the piece presented and of which specimens are preserved, among others, in the National Museum of Scotland (UK). Louis-Simon Boizot called Louis Boizot (Paris, October 9, 1743 – March 10, 1809), was a French sculptor best known for his models for Sèvres porcelain. He obtained the First Prize of Rome in 1762. He worked for Empress Catherine II of Russia, Queen Marie Antoinette, etc., making small sculptures, busts, terracotta models for watch cases, models for gilded bronze applications for furniture, etc. . His work is preserved in important private collections and institutions such as the Louvre Museum (Paris, France), the Carnavalet Museum, the Élysée Palace...
