Porcelain sculpture with two figures, European

About the Item

European porcelain sculpture depicting two women in a harmonious pose, together holding a basket raised above their heads. The female figures are sculpted with remarkable precision and attention to detail, highlighting the craftsmanship involved in creating the piece. Each facial expression is carefully crafted, conveying serenity and complicity between the characters. The women's posture is fluid and natural, suggesting movement and dynamic interaction as they support the basket. The figures' clothing is richly detailed, with folds and pleats that follow the contours of the bodies, creating a sense of lightness and movement. The piece stands out for its polychrome decoration, featuring a soft color palette that includes shades of beige, lilac, light blue and brownish nuances. These delicate colors reflect the fashion of the period represented, adding historical context to the work. The basket, positioned above the heads, is equally detailed, displaying an intricate design that highlights the craftsman's skill. This element centralizes the composition and possibly symbolizes a common activity or cultural tradition shared by the characters. The base of the sculpture is discreet, serving as a stable support without distracting from the main figures. The smooth transition between the base and the figures reinforces the unity of the piece, creating a pleasant visual continuity.

Two Meissen Porcelain Chinese Nodding Pagode Figures
By Meissen Porcelain
Located in London, GB
Called ‘pagode’ (or pagoda) figures, these Meissen Porcelain models are based on the sculptures of deities found in pagoda temples in the Far East. Meissen began to produce these kinds of porcelain figures in the early 18th century, prompted by the demand for the Far Eastern ‘pagodes’ being imported into Europe at this time. The Meissen factory in Germany was founded in 1709 and was the first producer of true porcelain wares in Europe. The company’s main patron was Augustus II the Strong, the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland. Meissen was, and continues to be, famous for its tableware, vases, candelabra, animal sculptures and figures, like this pair, which were often graceful and light-hearted in character. These models feature the Meissen mark of the two blue crossed swords on their undersides. These porcelain models take the form of a Chinese couple...
