Portuguese Baroque Madonna and Child Sculpture, 17th Century

About the Item

This late 17th-century Portuguese Baroque sculpture in polychromed wood depicts the Madonna holding the Christ Child, carved with exquisite detail and spiritual grace. The Virgin is portrayed in flowing Carmelite attire, including a long golden tunic, a veil cascading gently over her shoulders and a silver crown. Her facial features are delicately modeled: rounded cheekbones, a small mouth and nose, and an exposed neck that adds to the humanity of the figure. Her long hair falls softly down her back, evoking both elegance and reverence. The folds of the garments are deeply sculpted and gilded, catching the light with every curve — a hallmark of Iberian religious carving from this era. The left arm cradles a naked infant Jesus, rendered with tender naturalism in keeping with Baroque devotion. A rare example of 17th-century Portuguese religious sculpture—perfect for collectors of sacred art, museums, and interior designers seeking soulful heritage.
