Puerto Rican Jockey and Horse Wood Sculpture-“Caballos De Pica”

$350

About

This is a wood hand crafted sculpture of a jockey and a horse made by Puerto Rican’s craft-men with wood from the island. The sculpture is made in three parts- the jockey with the front upper part of the horse, the legs and then, the tail. After that they are hand painted in bright colors and a number is assigned to them. The horse is hold by a wood stick that is supported by a square wood base. They are made for a game of chance called Caballos de Pica that occurs during Fiestas Patronales in Puerto Rico (Yearly municipality celebration in honor of the town patron or saint). This game of chance came from California in 1927 and it is very liked by Puerto Rican people, but it is only allowed during this festivities. There is a tall octagonal table top where the horses with its numbers are placed like in a racetrack and there is a crank in one side of the table that a man is in charge to turn it on. Then you will see all the horses running until it stops by itself. Beside the racetrack table, there is another rectangular table with numbers from one to twenty four painted over it. In this one, people place the amount of money they want to bet for the horse they think is going to be their winner. Some people like to collect these horses in accordance to their lucky number or date of birth.
