Rare Antique Medieval Gothic Corpus Christi, Large, Untouched Museum Masterpiece

About the Item

An extraordinary and museum-worthy 14th/15th century Gothic Corpus Christi, masterfully hand-carved in wood with exceptional anatomical detail and partially polychromed in white and royal purple. This monumental devotional sculpture stands 145 cm tall, 65 cm wide, and 25 cm deep, embodying the emotional depth and spiritual expressiveness characteristic of high Gothic religious art. Recently discovered in an ancient underground cellar of a historic European building, this rare piece remained untouched for centuries. The untouched condition and unique provenance make it a true collector’s masterpiece. A video documenting the moment of discovery- before the piece was gently cleaned- is available upon request. The sculpture is entirely original: no missing parts, no repairs, and retaining its full structural and artistic integrity. From the dramatic expression of the face to the finely detailed ribs and musculature, the level of craftsmanship is extraordinary. The draped, knotted loincloth remains deeply carved and richly coloured in royal purple pigment, standing out against the worn but powerful polychromy of the body. A particularly rare feature is the fully carved reverse, including an anatomically detailed spine- an indication that this was likely commissioned for a prominent altar or cross intended to be viewed from all sides. Its current condition is exceptional given its age of over 500 years, with a rich natural patina enhancing its presence and authenticity. This work is not only a profound devotional object but a museum-grade piece of Gothic art history. Suitable for serious collectors, museum acquisitions, or distinguished interiors, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to own an untouched masterpiece from the late medieval period.
