About the Item

One of the most joyous and charming sculptures we have ever offered, this large, unique sculpture of a young boy riding a seal through the waves is a superb example of a genre of Beaux Arts & Art Deco sculpture that featured children and animals at play. Edith Parsons' "Frog Baby" and Janet Scudder's Tortoise Fountain are two examples of many, but "Riding the Waves" has a presence and energy that exceeds most others. The sculptor was Luigi Maraffi, who studied at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts with Charles Grafly and established his studio in South Philadelphia, which had a large Italian American Community in the early 20th century. This piece is signed and dated 1927. The medium is plaster with a gorgeous, deep green bronze finish.

"Hauling the Net, " Rare Art Deco Bronze with Nude Male Fisherman
By Alexandre Ouline
Located in Philadelphia, PA
This powerful bronze -- depicting a nude fisherman hauling in his net -- is a superb example of Art Deco sculpture influenced by Auguste Rodin's emphasis on the emotion and physicality of the human figure. Here, the strength and muscularity of the male figure is shown to great effect, its power belying the sculpture's diminutive size. It was sculpted by Alexandre Ouline, who executed a series of bronzes that depicted male figures performing feats of strength and courage, such as pulling a great weight or steering a ship in a stormy sea. Ouline won First Prize in the Seine et Marne agricultural fair...

"Allegory of Speed, " Art Deco Bronze Depicting the Ecstasy of Athletic Effort
Located in Philadelphia, PA
Large, rare and dramatic, this Art Deco bronze by Robert Delandre, circa 1930, depicts three nude male athletes all straining to reach the finish line of the race, their arms straining forward to win, and upward in ecstatic joy. The concentration and focus evident in their faces, and the beauty of their physiques, is beautifully captured by the artist, and the bronze is gorgeously finished in a green-brown patina that brings out the details of each figure. Delandre is largely known for his tabletop bronzes for the home or office, but he also entered competitions for public monuments and memorials. His most famous work is the "Monument to the Latham 47 Heroes" in Caudebec en Caux, France. The sculpture honors the men who disappeared in the prototype of the Latham 47 twin engine airplane in 1928, with Roald...
