About the Item

Description Polychrome wooden centerpiece sculpture depicting Saint Florian. St. Florian is depicted as a Roman soldier holding a bucket extinguishing fire on a burning cathedral. In the 15th century, patronage and protection against fires was attributed to St. Florian. In popular iconography he is distinguished by a bucket of water, in the attitude of saving a building from the flames. The cult of the saint spread widely in Austria and neighboring countries-Hungary, Slovakia, northern Italy. Similar Baroque sculptures, again monumental in size, with ancient Roman-style clothing, abundant gilding, can be seen in the Budapest museum.
