"Sainted Figure", Art Deco Sculpture of Bearded Saint with Halo by Jais Nielsen

About the Item

This bold and penetrating portrait of a bearded saint with bluish hair and a golden halo was sculpted by Jais Nielsen, perhaps Denmark's greatest sculptor and ceramicist in the Art Deco era. His exaggerated eyes and prominent beard show the influence of Etruscan and other ancient sculpture, but Nielsen's glaze choices give the sculpture a modern feeling too. Nielsen produced a wide range of vases and other pieces for Royal Copenhagen between 1921 and 1928. He was also made unique pieces, such as this, and was known for his painting. Nielsen joined the "De Tretten" or Group of Thirteen from 1909 to 1910, whose members stressed social themes. Two years later he exhibited at the Salon d'Automne in Paris.
