Sculpture of Cupid and Psyche

A sculpture of the God Eros & Pyche, one of the most classically important sculptures in history. "Psyche Revived by Cupid's Kiss" by Antonio Canova (1757-1822). Displayed in the Louvre Museum, the Hermitage and Villa Carlotta. This is an exquisitely executed 19th century Italian sculpture after Antonio Canova. The Greek Myth of Cupid & Psyche: Cupid's Mother, the goddess Venus, envious of the beauty of her son's beloved, dispatched Psyche into the Underworld to fetch a vessel containing Proserpina's beauty ointment, forbidding her to open it. Psyche could not resist looking inside the flask and immediately fell into a deep sleep. Only the kiss of Cupid returned her to life. This is the moment caught by the sculptor. Canova took his inspiration from a legend recounted by Latin author Apuleius in the Metamorphoses. Antonio Canova (1 November 1757-13 October 1822) was one of Italy's finest sculptors from the Republic of Venice. He was the epitome of the neoclassical style and his work marked a return to classical refinement.
