About the Item

Capodimonte porcelain figurine depicting a peasant, made by Giuseppe Cappelli in 1958 Ø cm 18 Ø cm 14 h cm 22 Giuseppe Cappè (1921-2008) was a renowned Italian artist, widely recognized for his exquisite Capodimonte porcelain sculptures and figurines. Born in Milan, he lived and worked in Lomagna, near a porcelain factory, where he created works that achieved international fame, particularly in the United States. Cappé is considered one of the best porcelain sculptors in Capodimonte. He drew inspiration from Italy's rich Baroque-Alexandrian folk tradition, evident in the detailed stucco work of Serpotta (Palermo), the porcelain of Capodimonte itself, and the Neapolitan nativity scenes. He mixed Baroque roots with verist and neoclassical folk traditions, often incorporating a humorous and creative touch. He began making sculptures as early as 1946. He worked as head sculptor at the IPA studio and later at King. In 1959 he opened his artistic porcelain factory "Cappé"; he created about 250 designs continuously throughout his life. His figures often depict allegories, rural scenes and everyday life, sometimes with a romantic or humorous touch. He produced both classic lines, often in white and gold porcelain inspired by Greek mythology, and a second line of more humorous and detailed works. Giuseppe Cappè passed away in Lomagna on May 7, 2008, leaving an important artistic legacy in the world of fine porcelain.
