About the Item

Decorate a shelf with this elegant set of porcelain horses and riders figurines. Crafted in Germany circa 1960, each hand painted colorful figure is marked with a crown and N mark (attributed to Potschappel, founded by Carl Thieme in 1872, Saxony, Germany). One sculpture depicts Napoleon Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821), a French statesman and military leader who became during the French Revolution and led several successful campaigns during the French Revolutionary Wars. Known as Napoleon 1, he was Emperor of the French people from 1804 until 1814 and again briefly in 1815 during the Hundred Days. Napoleon dominated European and global affairs for more than a decade while defending France against a series of coalitions during the Napoleonic Wars. He won many of these wars and a vast majority of his battles, building a large Empire that ruled over much of continental Europe before its final collapse in 1815. Today, he is considered one of the greatest commanders in history, and his wars and campaigns are studied at military schools worldwide. Napoleon's political and cultural legacy has made him one of the most celebrated and controversial leaders in human history. Two sculptures are named after the "Garde Imperiale" (The Imperial Guard was originally a small group of elite soldiers of the French Army under the direct command of Napoleon I, but grew considerably over time. It acted as Napoleon bodyguard and tactical reserve, while he was careful of its use in battle. The Guard was divided into the staff, infantry, cavalry, and artillery regiments, as well as battalions of sappers and marines. The guard itself as a whole distinguished between the experienced veterans and less experienced members by being separated into three sections: the Old Guard, Middle Guard and Young Guard). One figure is named Exelmans (after Marshal Rémi Joseph Isidore Exelmans (1775-1852), 1st Comte Exelmans; he was a distinguished French soldier of the Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars, as well as a political figure of the following period). The last one named Bessieres (after Jean-Baptiste Bessières, 1st Duke of Istria (1768-1813); he was a Marshal of the Empire of the Napoleonic Era. Each sculpture is in excellent condition with rich colors. Largest: 9" W x 11" H.
