About the Item

Staffordshire figurines are a kind of popular ceramic figurines that were made in England from the 18th century onwards. Most Staffordshire figurines made between 1740 and 1900 were produced by small potteries, and manufacturer's details are generally missing. Most Victorian figurines (1837-1900) were designed (like these) to stand on a shelf or mantelpiece, and are therefore only modeled and decorated where they are visible from the front and sides. These are known as "flatbacks". The figures were created mainly in Staffordshire, but also in other counties and in Scotland, all of which can loosely be called "Staffordshire figures". The figurines described by this term are usually made of earthenware, although the early figurines may be made of stoneware, and the more expensive porcelain figurines made by the larger potteries in Staffordshire and elsewhere in England are not usually covered by this term. These reflect the metropolitan and international style and have been more carefully modeled and painted. Of the wide variety of figurines produced, the Staffordshire dog figurine was the most ubiquitous, especially as a pair of King Charles Spaniels for a mantelpiece. Once cheap, Staffordshire figurines are extensively collected in the English-speaking world, and modern imitations and forgeries abound. The rarest figurines, mostly early figurines, can sometimes fetch six-figure prices. A settee of circa 1745 was sold at a Christie's auction for $168,000 in 2006 and at Sotheby's for $179,520 in 1987. Even the late mass market figures are expensive today and there is a considerable amount of literature devoted to them. This English Staffordshire watch holder with two figurines and a pair of lambs is beautifully decorated and can be classified as early to mid-19th century. The figure shows 2 musicians with instruments in their hands. One of the figures holds a tambourine, the other one a bagpipe. At their feet are 2 lambs. The lambs have a grainy decoration. This kind of modelling makes the high quality of the figure. This "pocket watch holder" would have been clearly visible on a gentleman's desk or bedside table. At night the gentlemen usually hung their pocket watches on special stands. Since the dial was raised and visible, this had the effect of transforming the pocket watch into a clock. The watch holders were made of many materials, including wood, porcelain, metal and bone. The factories in Staffordshire produced a variety of holders in bright colors and shapes.
