About the Item

Surrealist Bronze Sculpture of a Woman and Alligator on Skates Continental, circa 1960s Dimensions: 8" H × 4" W × 4.5" D A whimsical and surrealist bronze depicting a fantastical pair: a female nude figure and an anthropomorphic alligator, hand in hand as they glide forward on curling bronze ice skates. Executed in the lost-wax technique, the figures are modeled with deliberately rough, textured surfaces, giving them a raw, almost lava-like tactility that heightens their primitive presence. The burnished brown patina is enhanced with golden undertones, emphasizing the muscular and attenuated forms. The subject matter blends humor and allegory, recalling the whimsical anthropomorphism of François-Xavier and Claude Lalanne as well as the existential distortion of Giacometti. The alligator, rendered upright in a human stance, becomes a companion rather than a predator, while the skates introduce an element of instability and play, suggesting the precariousness of balance in both life and partnership. This surrealist duet embodies the spirit of 20th-century fantastical realism, merging animal, human, and dreamlike imagination into a single dynamic moment. Both humorous and slightly unsettling, the piece would complement collections of modernist bronze, surrealist objects, or decorative art with a narrative edge. Condition: Excellent vintage condition with intentional surface irregularities inherent to the casting process. No repairs or restorations observed.

Modern Bronze "Balancing Woman" (Mujer Equilibrista), Style Abigail Varela
Located in West Palm Beach, FL
Modern Bronze "Balancing Woman" (Mujer Equilibrista), Style Abigail Varela "Balancing Woman" (Mujer Equilibrista)—Modern Bronze Sculpture of a Female Acrobat in the Style of Abigail Varela (Venezuelan, b. 1948) A graceful and expressive modern bronze sculpture depicting a female acrobat in suspension, rendered in the stylized, voluptuous form associated with Venezuelan visual artist Abigail Varela. This commanding yet whimsical figure, titled Mujer Equilibrista ("Balancing Woman"), evokes themes of strength, poise, and femininity through its abstracted anatomy and lyrical posture. The bronze woman, with exaggerated hips, elongated limbs, and a serene upturned face, hangs by her hands from a detachable 19-inch diameter metal hoop. The sculpture is composed of two separate elements: the circular ring and the figure, which is cast in dark-patinated bronze with a smooth, tactile surface. The full composition measures 48 inches high by 19 inches wide and 7 inches deep; the bronze figure itself measures 27" H x 7" W x 5" D. Striking both in silhouette and scale, this work reflects the influence of Varela’s celebrated archetypes, honoring feminine power, gravity, and elegance. Ideal for indoor suspension from ceiling or wall-mounted hook. Unmarked. In excellent vintage condition with minor wear consistent with age. A powerful statement of the school of Abigail Varela & modern Latin American sculpture...
