About the Item

Meet "this is not a chair too". Unique and handcrafted piece by Dutch artist Max Jungblut. This "chair" is a sculptural interpretation of the "Searching" club chair by Jungblut. It is made from numerous handcut pieces of reclaimed wood joined together to form a magnificent sculptural object. It can be placed in different positions. The globe (a piece called "My world") can be placed solitary next to the "chair" or on top of the legs when it is placed up side down. The globe measures 65cm in diameter. THIS IS NOT A CHAIR 2 WITHIN HIS LONG-TERM RESEARCH PROJECT SEARCHING CHAIRS, ARTIST AND DESIGNER MAX JUNGBLUT (MAASTRICHT, 1966) EXPLORES THE BOUNDARIES BETWEEN ARTISTIC AUTONOMY AND ECONOMIC, CAPITALIST PRODUCTION PROCESSES. THE WORK TITLED “THIS IS NOT A CHAIR 2” TELLS THE STORY OF THE THIN LINE BETWEEN ART AND DESIGN. THIS WORK NEVER HAD THE ACTUAL GOAL TO BE REALISED AS AN FINAL DESIGN. INSTEAD, THE SEARCH ITSELF BECAME THE ARTISTIC PROJECT AND THE SOURCE OF THIS UNIQUE WORK. SOME DESIGNS LOSE EVERY REFERENCE TO A FUNCTIONAL OBJECT, WHILE OTHERS FULLY EMBRACE THE CONTEMPORARY PARADIGM OF (MASS) PRODUCTION. This non-functional, sculptural version of the searching club chair is presented (Jungblut reworks discarded industrial tile laths – a recurring material in his practice) as an object to think about, not an object to use.
