Two Putti, c. 1640-1650. Giovanni Pietro and Carlo Carra (workshop of)
About the Item
Pair of Carrara marble Putti, depicted in a mirror-image position to each other: softly reclining, the torso advanced and slightly off to the side, one arm resting on the thigh, while the opposite arm is raised, the closed hand gripping an item that has not come down to us. Thick chiseled hair frames the two faces with expressionless attitudes.
As Giuseppe Sava points out in the expert report he compiled, the physiognomies, looks, and hair styles hark back to the Carra workshop, particularly Giovanni Pietro and Carlo, sons of the progenitor Giovanni Antonio, originally from Ticino but active in Lombardy. The two brothers inherited their father's workshop and formed a fruitful partnership, making it difficult to distinguish the business between the two. One of the most fitting examples is the marbles made for the altar of relics in the cathedral of Montichiari (BS), where the sturdy, stocky figures, and faces with vacant expressions, show affinities with our Putti.
The pair of sculptures under consideration must originally have belonged to a larger complex, most likely a fountain, as their gestures would denounce, with their hands in the act of supporting the spouts from which water was supposed to gush.
