French Art Deco terracotta sculpture by Ugo Cipriani (1887-1960), France, 1920. Mother and child. Terracotta patinated bronze. Measures: Width 17.7" (45cm), height 14" (35.5cm), depth 6.3" (16cm). Excellent condition! Signed "U.Cipriani" on the base and marked "Terre Cuite d'Art" (see photos).
Ugo Cipriani, born in Florence, Italy on August 13, 1887, died in Paris on June 18, 1960, is an Italian sculptor.
Son of sculptor Adolfo Cipriani and Emilia Pancani, Ugo Cipriani is the fifth child of nine siblings. He lives in the Oltrarno district in Borgo San Frediano.
After studying at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence, Ugo Cipriani works with marble, terracotta, bronze and alabaster in the spirit of the Art Deco movement of the 1920s. One of his most famous works, a bronze monument by the Italian nationalist and irredentist Guglielmo Oberdan, stands in the square of the same name in Florence.
In 1935, Ugo Cipriani emigrates to France to escape the fascist regime of Mussolini. He lives in Paris as a political refugee and continues to create there until his death in 1960.
