Venetian Bronze Statuette of St. Jerome, 18th/19th Century

About the Item

Bronze statuette of St. Jerome, or St Hieronymous, in the manner of the Venetian sculptor Alessandro Vittorio (1525-1608) by the lost wax technique of bronze casting, which leaves a hollow core. The Viennese art scholar Leo Planiscig had attributed small Italian bronze statuettes like this one to an imagined Master of the Gaunt Old Man - Der Meister der hageren Alten. An unknown sculptor working in the circle of Alessandro Vittorio. The figures are characterized by an anatomically exact reproduction of the musculature of an older man in a most aesthetic and artistic manner, which would have been rather pleasing to the elite class of Venice which was composed of mostly older men. The attributes of St. Jerome depicted here are a walking cane and a torch at his feet. The statuette itself measures 8.5" in height. It rest on a marble base of green breccia to which it is not attached. Provenance: Palm Beach, Florida Art Market.
