Vintage Bronze Pauline Bonaparteas as Venus Victrix Late 20th Century

About the Item

A large vintage bronze Neoclassical Revival sculpture of Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix, by Antonio Canova, signed and dating from the late 20th Century. She is staged as a half-naked beauty on a couch, her head resting on her right arm, holding an apple in the left hand. The patinated bronze sculpture features gilt high-lights and is raised on a black marble base. It bears the replica signature of the artist, Canova. The original can be seen at the Museo e Galleria Borghese, in Rome. "Pauline Bonaparte as Venus Victrix", (Venus Victorious), is probably the most famous work by the Italian sculptor Antonio Canova. Pauline Bonaparte, sister of the French statesman Napoleon, insisted on being portrayed as Venus by Canova in 1807. Condition: In excellent condition, please see photos for confirmation. Dimensions in cm: Height 34 x Width 53 x Depth 19 & Weight 19.5 kg Dimensions in inches: Height 1 foot, 1 inch x Width 1 foot, 9 inches x Depth 7 inches & Weight 43.0 lbs Pauline Bonaparte, (born Oct. 20, 1780, Ajaccio, Corsica—died June 9, 1825, Florence), second sister of Napoleon to survive infancy, and the most beautiful of his sisters. She married Gen. C.V.E. Leclerc (1772–1802), a staff officer of Napoleon, in 1797 and accompanied him to San Domingo. When Leclerc died of yellow fever she returned to Paris. She then married Prince Camillo Borghese (Nov. 6, 1803) and went with him to Rome, but soon tired of him, and returned to Paris, where her behaviour caused some scandal. In 1806 she received the title of duchess of Guastalla. Her offhand treatment of Napoleon’s new empress, Marie-Louise, led to her removal from court in 1810. Nevertheless, she went with her mother to Elba in 1814 and is said to have expressed a wish to share Napoleon’s exile in St. Helena. She died of cancer in Florence in 1825. Canova’s statue of her as Venus reclining on a couch is well known. Antonio Canova (1757-1822) was a leading representative of the Italian classicism. Characteristic of Canova was the emphasis on rest instead of moving, understated restraint instead of exuberant emotion and elegant simplicity instead of illusion. Canova was the last Italian artist who achieved worldwide fame at his time. The Italian architecture, sculpture and painting had played a pioneering role in the cultural life of Europe for several centuries. This domination came to an end with Canova's death in 1822. The Medici lions are a pair of marble sculptures of lions, one of which is Roman, dating to the 2nd century AD, and the other a 16th-century pendant; both were by 1598 placed at the Villa Medici, Rome. Since 1789 they have been displayed at the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence. The sculptures depict standing male lions with a sphere or ball under one paw, looking to the side. Copies of the Medici lions have been copied and publicly installed in over 30 other locations, and smaller versions made in a variety of media; Medici lion has become the term for the type.
