About

A beautiful very fine pair of Japanese Gofun Meiji period Emperor and Empress dolls, circa 1850-1899. Depicting the emperor and empress in highly detailed clothing, traditional crushed bright white oyster shell faces and hands. Figures in elaborate many layered embroidered vivid textiles on a double base a textile covered attached base and a black lacquered with brass trim removable base. Beautiful empress face with elaborate headdress aside the distinctive emperor, both very attractive figures, both figures with inscriptions on the wood underneath the base. Dimensions: 16" W. x 16" H. x 7.5" D. Provenance from the Wm. Harkness Collection America’s Philanthropic Socialite of Standard Oil Fame and Fortune.
