"Greek Soldier" Attenuated Nude Male Figure - Mid Century

About the Item

Showing the twin influences of pre-Classical Greek sculpture and Diego Giacometti, this attenuated bronze sculpture of a nude Greek soldier, complete with brass spear, was the mid-century equivalent of a Grand Tour bronze, collected by visitors and tourists in the 1940s, 50s and 60s. It is the merging of primitive and sensual, the soldier posing in a confident way that suggests he owns the world.

The Smiths captured the night life of Harlem, including musicians and actors such as Harry Belafonte, Sydney Poitier, Eartha Kitt, Ossie Davis, Ruby Dee, Count Basie, Ethel Waters, Billie Holiday, Hattie McDaniels, Zora Neal Hurston, Step n' Fetchit, Pearl...
